No Plucking Required! I bought the wrong Quail!! Button Quail, what is that??
Quail meat and eggs
Why not, they mature in 6 weeks WHAT? Just skin them for food, no plucking? Less living space?
So it seems like quail is a pretty easy animal to add to the homestead. Very small, mature quickly and my 11 year old is excited about it. I'm usually the one that insists or just get an animal and takes care of it, but with his interest, It makes you as a parent more enticed.
I once had quail at a friends baby's 1 month party, it was the 1st I ever heard of it. It was so delish I could never forget it. It was a Vietnamese recipe that I will have to acquire soon!!
I am really asking for it!! I just keep adding to the homestead, trying to make it sustainable, simple and trying to produce my own food, hey its a start!! I know I like the taste so now its time to start my own flock. Apparently quail grow out for 6 weeks or so and start laying, or are ready for the dinner table. Did you hear me? 6 weeks!!! Wow, with chickens it seems like forever, seriously, just to get a 1st egg!! So they take up small space, are pretty pleasant and clean, and are a quick turn around for whichever need you want.
The eggs are very small but full of nutrition with less fat and cholesterol then a chicken egg. They only need one square foot of space per bird vs. four per chicken. OK, I'm in.
So, I went to the Facebook, ya know, all the crazy chicken and homesteading pages we belong to. I even looked on Craigslist. I instantly found a few quail, pretty inexpensive, they were about $5 each, so much less then a chicken. They were beautiful. White, tuxedo and Cinnamon. I posted I wanted them all. I met the nice lady the next day. She said she kept them in her house and they were her pets. She had them in a homemade round tube like cage, so they couldn't fly around. I took a peek and didn't do anything with them until I got home.
When I got home, these little things were between the size of a finch and a canary. What the heck? what happened? Can you seriously get enough meat or eggs from this tiny little thing? I then re read what I bought, they are BUTTON QUAIL. Off to research!!
What is the point of button quail? So little! On the 2nd day, I had the smallest little dark green egg at the bottom of the bird cage!! It was so little, you couldn't eat it!!
