We start off today with a few small chores to check the animals and unload some pumpkins from the truck. Jeremy starts forestry mulching/brush hogging the goat pen to get rid of the newly grown scrub oaks.  Then I MAKE A FREE DIY PALLET COMPOST BIN!

You will need choose 3 pallets. Make sure you pay attention to the stamp on the side of the wood. You want to pick pallets with a KH(Kiln Dried) or HT( Heat treatment) on the side stamped. DO NOT pick one that says MB (Methyl Bromide) that is a chemical used for pests and can leach into your compost soil and eventually into your organic garden.  Next you will need, some screws & a screw gun! Place the 3 pallets in a 3 sided square shape and secure its shape with screwing each pallet to each other.  Make sure you secure it so it can stand the weight of the compost putting pressure on the outer walls. THATS IT!! That easy!

To start your compost pile, you will need equal brown (carbon) and green (nitrogen) matter to start to fill your DIY Pallet Compost Bin.  Layer them inside the perimeter of your new bin. Make sure you adequately water your compost periodically to help with the break down process. Use a pitch fork to turn over all your compost every 4 to 5 weeks. Letting it sit longer then 2 weeks will allow the middle to heat up and start the bacterial microbe process of creating the compost.  Us backyard gardeners and composters love to call this broken down finished product black gold. You will see when yours is complete! You will have a beautiful organic compost to use in your garden, potted plants and seed starting trays.
