How to start a Worm Farm? DIY Vermiculture set up Tutorial |Make your own compost| This tutorial type video shows you how I set up my worm bins for my worm farm. I use a large Rubbermaid container with holes drilled along the top. I gather homemade compost we made from goat manure and hay, place fresh goat manure on top then gather dried leaves from the homestead. We then water and prep, count worms then release them into their new home. I have tried Vermiculture since the early Summer. I have made multiple worm bins and experimented with different bedding mediums, I had growth in size and multiplication of worms I used a stackable worm bin that I made, it worked really well. Then it got really hot here in Oklahoma. They are kept in my barn, out of the sun and wind and dry conditions. I fed them and kept them hydrated. Then the 100 degree weather struck. LOST THEM ALL! They seemed to just disinigrate! Makes sense since their body is made up of 90% water. Lets talk about natural fertilizer, that's better then anything you can buy! When I had all my worm bins I was able to harvest the worm castings, called Vermicast, for my garden and vegetable starts! It is like gold! It has all the microorganisms that make it perfect to grow plants directly in the compost or use it as a soil amendment to enrich the soil, help deture pests and disease, pathogen suppression and water retention. It is such a benefit to any plant, in a pot or in a garden. I also made a lot of worm tea. I used it for all my porch plants, indoor growing seedlings and outside used it as a foliar spray on all of my vegetables. It is just as amazing as the compost. I placed a few cups of straight worm compost into an old sock. I suspended it above a 5 gallon bucket that was full of fresh water, so it was completely submerged. I then placed an aquarium aerator with a large bubbling stone into the bucket. I kept it in the barn and out of the sun for 24 hours. This helps aerate the tea and boost the amount of microbes. Now, I haven't talked about the care for the worms or how to feed them. You must always remember, your worms will produce compost only as good as what you feed them. But enough for now, this was just a little back story on my fascination with worm compost for my gardening and my addiction to permaculture! I will share more in each worm video, I will check back in 1 week from now to make sure they are doing well and I will take you along and film their bedding, their health and growth as well as what we feed them and how I store their food and what you can and cannot feed them. All on the next episode! Thanks so much for watching, please subscribe so you will be notified when we upload our next vermiculture video! #Vermiculture #HowTostartaWormFarm #WormBin
