How we Broadcast Rye Grain Seed on our No-Till Deer Plots
First we went to a local feed store, the BIGGEST one I have ever been to! They had a lot of options and endless buildings full of feed and seeds, it was a farmers dream! We then came home and headed out to the orchard. We broadcast rye grain seed all over the orchard area that was previously seeded this spring with Soy bean. The problem always lies with the rainfall. It did not do well, was very sporadic and only grew randomly in areas. We broadcast No Till rye which has several purposes. It helps with deer management, creates biomass, can be cut in the spring and used as green manure and is a cover crop. Its sustainable and helps with erosion control. We are on a very rocky mountainous terrain, so any help to break up this hard clay and create a "Nitrogen Scavenger" to help grow soil. We follow the same process at the deer feeder areas, and deer plots on our clearing.
